What is a traditional wedding? This is a question that we get asked many times. When we mention a traditional wedding we are typically referring to an ethnic or cultural wedding ceremony. This is a wedding ceremony with the same significance as a mainstream wedding celebration – to unite a man and woman. Nigerians, Ghanaians and many cultures and countries in West Africa have these wedding ceremonies. This traditional wedding ceremony is just as important as the white wedding ceremony and a couple is considered as good as married on having a traditional wedding ceremony.
For africans living in Diaspora, a traditional wedding is usually a prelude to a white wedding! One of the main differences in a “traditional” wedding and a western wedding celebration is that the bride does not wear a white dress. She arrives resplendent in colorful rich attire fit for African royalty. In this case, the attire was appropriate as Miracle is a real life Nigerian princess!
The ceremony is typically held for most couple in the US on a weekday – usually a Friday or a Thursday – before the white wedding. It usually starts around 7 pm as guests, clad in fine African attire and headgear, trinkle in after work. For Miracle’s wedding we were so excited to see her and Garvin because we had worked with them for the proposal and their engagement photos – which we took in Baltimore, Maryland. After her hair and makeup was done she was ushered into the brightly light and lavishly decorated Hampton Conference Center and the festivities begun!
Congratulations to Miracle and Garvin on your traditional wedding day! It was an honor to serve as your wedding photographer and we wish you years and years of happiness and joy.
