Sometimes love is fireworks, and sometimes it just sneaks up on you over time. Either way, it is equally beautiful, and the two people involved find a blessing that is truly a rare gem. Kinyatta and Julie, our first same sex couple, know this to be true as they have been friends since 2004. After meeting at a mutual friend’s birthday party, the two really hit it off.
Seeing how affectionate they are with each other, it’s easy to understand why these two are attracted to each other. We are so proud that they chose us to cover their wedding at the Samuel Riggs Alumni Center in College Park, Maryland. They spent a lot of time cultivating their relationship, taking it from acquaintances to best friends and eventually to lovers.
Their first date was at the McCormick and Schmidt’s restaurant in Washington, DC, and since that beautiful first date, it has been bliss for the couple ever since. The bride and bride got dressed at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center at College Park, MD. This venue is one of our favorite wedding venues in the Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia area.
Both brides had already had their hair and makeup done at the College Park Marriott, and now it was time to celebrate as they both got ready for their big ceremony surrounded by friends and family. By the time she was ready to step out of her room, Kinyatta looked so beautiful, she looked like she belonged on the cover of a bridal magazine.
In another room nearby, Julie also got ready surrounded by her closest friends and family members. When she’d finished with her suit, she had a sophisticated elegance about her that turned heads everywhere she went.
Downstairs, there was so much anticipation in the air, guests had already lined the ceremony hall from wall to wall, and they eagerly anticipated the arrival of the couple. When the procession started, everyone turned in their seats to see the magical moment as everyone in party walked by.
Their vows were lovingly exchanged, and the moment they were pronounced a wedded couple, the crowd leapt to their feet and cheered for the new union. We photographers captured the every second on camera – right down to the beautiful emotion clearly seen on the faces of the brides.
As guests made their way into the reception hall, we took the opportunity to snap photos of the newlyweds – both as a couple alone and with their friends and families. The sight of the couple standing together on the steps of the center was breathtaking to everyone who stood by.
The reception hall had been elegantly decorated for the celebration, with a stunning cake standing proudly in the corner. It wasn’t long before the seats around all the tables were filled, and the celebration began! There was tons of dancing and hugs being passed around, as well as speeches and toasts made to the newlyweds.Laughter, blessings, and well-wishes filled the air amidst the happy chatter that hummed from each of the tables, and it was clear how much love and support Julie and Kinyatta’s family and friends have for them. Dancing and fun lasted long into the night, and in addition to we photographers snapping as many photos as we could, both friends and families snagged the brides for selfies and group photos as well.
After a couple of final romantic photos, the newlyweds were sent off under a banner of sparklers to start their new lives together – the perfect ending to a perfectly magical day.Thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of your very special day, it’s easy to see that you are going to have many, many beautiful years together, and all of us here at Judah Avenue want to extend our deepest congratulations.
