Last weekend a sweet sweet love that blossomed in Cape Town, South Africa was celebrated in a stately and romantic wedding affair at the Carnegie Library in Mount Vernon Square, Washington DC. Susan and Tom met at a study abroad program and got to know each other cooking dinner, riding to classes and having lunch on the steps of the university at cape town. They flirted with each other on safaris and started dating formally in Washington DC.
Their Judah Avenue wedding photographers Joy and Coreene did an amazing job documenting their day in wonderful dreamy imagery. The bride’s bouquet was a wonderful blend of roses in shades of pink, peach, and white – flower and color combinations that were also seen in the stately flower arrangements which lined the aisles in elegant golden vases. As always, Lola Divine came through with flawless planning!
The joyous ceremony included many African-inspired symbolic elements, such as oranges, coconuts, and bananas, which helped to inform the congregation about African culture. The bananas, in particular, signify longevity as the banana tree never dies, and fertility as bananas grow in bunches. Both of the families were invited under the umbrella of the kente cloth, an African traditional cloth – woven for centuries by the indigenous people of Ghana – to announce that the two families are now united as one family under one cover.
The couple also enjoyed a lovely, spontaneous kiss under the kente cloth, which was a beautiful moment for the families and guests. Tables at the reception were simply and elegantly decorated, and featured gorgeous, colorful flower arrangements that included deep red and yellow roses, as well as brightly colored African fans. Playful itineraries displayed on the guest tables told the story of the couple that began five years ago in Cape Town, South Africa. Here is a great one of Lola from Lola’s beauty mark putting some beauty touches on Susan!
The Carnegie Library at Mt. Vernon Square in Washington, DC offers both interior and exterior venues for weddings, including L’Enfant Map Room which features an illuminated map of the city on the room’s floor, all surrounded by the magnificent architecture of this historic landmark which originally opened in 1902.
