OMG! You’re getting married! You know what that means, don’t you? It means it’s wedding photography HASHTAG time! You know, that special time when you create a #OneOfaKind phrase that takes you to online pics of your wedding. If you haven’t yet decided on your hashtag, or if you’d like a little guidance, I took some time to write this post just for you. Here’s your Wedding Photo Hashtag 101!
Why so much happy hashtag hubbub?
Whether for traditional weddings or modern ones, hashtags have become infused into wedding ceremonies all over the world. They give you instant access to every precious picture of your magical day, as well as the pictures taken on the days leading up to your special day! Photos with your hashtag are taken from the many diverse angles and perspectives of your photography-happy friends, all located in one single nook on the web. And the best part? You, your friends and your family will be able to quickly find your photos for many years to come. Who knows… maybe your grandchildren will be commenting on them one day, on some super advanced form of the Internet!
How do I make a good hashtag?
Good question. Here are some good answers!
Capitalize each word
First, the easy stuff: Capitalization. True, caps don’t change anything as far as your hashtag goes (i.e., #this and #This and #THIS are the same hashtag.) But you should nonetheless use caps to make your hashtag crystal clear.
EXAMPLE:
What’s easier to read and type?
#andrewwedssamantha
vs
#AndrewWedsSamantha
Uniqueness is a must
Ok, now the not so easy stuff: Uniqueness. You certainly don’t want someone else to use your same hashtag, unless you’d like their wedding photos mixing in with your photos. (#EpicNope.) So #SmithWedding is most certainly not going to fly, and neither is #MillerMarriage. Creating a unique hashtag is becoming really hard to do, as this GQ post warns. One good way to season your hashtag with uniqueness is to weave numbers into it, such as your wedding date – i.e., #ToddAndAmySmith5516 for a date of May 5. Nicknames can also be used to add uniqueness (unless your nickname is “Smith,”) as well as the setting of your wedding (like “beach,”) or a city, or the season. Memorability
Obviously, the easier it is for your wedding guests to remember your hashtag, the better! Rhyming helps, like #BethAndLouSayIDo, or, #BenAndShaeWedInMay4516
Alliteration is also good for memorability, like: #FranklinFamilyForever5516.
Oh, and you’ll also want to make sure your hashtag isn’t too long. Chances are, no one will remember #JenAndBobWelcomeYouToOurGloriousWeddingOnMay5.
