Mary Rose and Erinayo’s traditional Nigerian wedding was simply beautiful. It was so nice to see all the many ways they merged their cultures for their wedding celebration. The bride and her family looked gorgeous in Nigerian traditional attire and the groom, Erinayo’s family was very excited to welcome Mary Rose into their family. The ceremony consisted of a play or mock ceremony, officiated by MCs called the “alagba” who narrates and directs the order of events. In a traditional Nigerian ceremony, the groom’s family goes to ask the bride’s family for permission to marry their daughter. This is an important aspect of the marriage celebration or traditional wedding.
The groom must also show his seriousness to marry the bride by prostrating with his friends at the feet of her parents, begging for their approval. Everyone looked resplendent in traditional Nigerian wedding attire “asoebi”, complete with the native head wrap known as the “gele” and all the artifacts need to look royal for the party. We had a wonderful time at the wedding. Everyone was joyful and excited to see the day play out. When the bride appeared, lead forth by her family and girlfriends the room erupted in applause and cheers of welcome mixed in with the sound of traditional drumming. What a night! Thank you to our bride and groom for choosing us to capture this special day!!
